This week, I finally dove into Hell’s Angels. I was scanning my bookshelf for the next read when my Thompson collection caught my eye. It dawned on me that I’ve never read his book on the Angels. That’s absolutely criminal, considering my thing for gonzo journalism, and motorcycles.
Thompson spent a year riding, drinking, and brawling alongside the club at the height of their rise to outlaw royalty. It’s raw, reckless, and full of moments that make you wonder where the line between journalist and participant really is and what happens when you cross it.
“The Edge… There is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over. The others-the living-are those who pushed their control as far as they felt they could handle it, and then pulled back, or slowed down, or did whatever they had to when it came time to choose between Now and Later. But the edge is still Out there.”
― Hunter S. Thompson, Hell’s Angels
